Applications are now open for the 2012/2013 round of Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire’s Community Funding Program and the Locality Funding Program.

The Community Funding Program is a partnership between the Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire and the Byford and Districts Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank to provide local community grants for up to $1500.

This funding can be used for a range of purposes such as sporting equipment, toys for playgroups, shade sails or used as seed funding in the development of new community organisations.

Applications for the Community Funding Program close on Friday 30 March 2012. Community groups must discuss their proposed application with the Shire’s Community Development team prior to submitting it.

Shire President Bruce Moore said Council encourages eligible community groups to apply for either the Community Funding Program or the Locality Funding Program.

“Community groups play a vital role in helping to beautify and enhance our Shire as well as providing various services such as playgroups, sporting clubs and youth groups, so these funding programs are designed to assist these groups,” Cr Moore said.

“For larger projects, community groups could consider applying for the Locality Funding Program.”

The Locality Funding Program aims to provide funding for townscape projects that will benefit the wider community in the six localities of Oakford, Byford, Mundijong, Jarrahdale, Serpentine and Keysbrook.

Locality entry statements, street furniture, art in public places, memorials, playground equipment and barbeque facilities are just some of the projects that can be funded through the Locality Funding program.

The grant may also be used as either seed funding or leveraging to secure further grants from other funding bodies. Groups will be required to contribute to the total cost of the project by either a cash or in-kind component.

As with the Community Funding Program, applicants must discuss their proposed application with the Shire’s Community Development team before they submit it.

Applications for the Locality Funding Program close on Friday 29 June 2012.

For an application form or further information on either of the programs, please click here or contact the Shire’s Community Development team on 9526 1111.

The new Cat Act 2011 will be implemented through a two phases approach;

Phase One by 1 November 2012, and

Phase Two by 1 November 2013

The two year lead-in period will provide the community, industry and local government the opportunity to make plan to comply with the requirements.

The development of this legislation follows extensive public consultation in July 2010, through the release of a consultation paper seeking input on the proposed legislation. Five hundred and ninety (590) submissions were received during the consultation period, with overwhelming support (84%) given for the introduction of all three key elements proposed in the consultation paper:

Compulsory identification through microchipping;

Compulsory registration; and

Compulsory sterilisation.

While research indicates that legislation will not resolve all problems associated with cats, it will provide the mechanism to:

Encourage responsible cat ownership;

Reduce the number of unwanted cats being bred;

Allow for cats found in a public place or on private property to be seized; and

Allow for reuniting of lost cats with their owners.
